Well, I have to say, I don't actually KNOW a lot of nursery rhymes, but I have heard a few, so just in case my little Asian students were not familiar with them, I was looking up poems for the program leaders to recite to them and then they would be creating their own. Then, I happen to come upon this site with a bunch of poems and stories, some of which I didn't know Mother Goose wrote.
Then I see Jack and Jill. Well, we all know this one, but all I could do was laugh because the first thing I thought about was Ricky Gervais. Watch the video and you will understand why I found it funny. Anyway, as I continued searching, I found coloring pages for the rhymes and these were the ones i found most amusing:
Jack: ARGH! Jill: Goodbye Jack! See you in the Hospital
Why she didn't help him, I am not sure. She just stood there, watched, and waved.
Okay, so Mary's school is Mary Had a Little Lamb Elementary and WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THAT?! That is no lamb...
Jack: FOREEEEEEEEEEEEE! Silly boy, should have stuck with golf and not running off to some hill getting water will Jill. It is a tad bit safer.
OMG! They were too late! MAN...er I mean LADYBIRD DOWN!!
Yeah, needless to say, after seeing all of this and analyzing all of these poems, I am worried about the messages sent. I know that children don't start understanding most of these concepts until later and all they care about are the rhymes, but I still find these "nursery rhymes" to be a little twisted in a way, but that is completely my own opinion. Any thoughts?
